The Chess Board

ChessStake uses a standard 8x8 chess board. The interface is designed for both desktop and mobile play.

Special Moves

Chess has several special moves that beginners should learn. ChessStake automatically handles these when legal.

♔ ♖

Castling

Move king two squares towards a rook. The rook jumps to the other side. Only possible if neither piece has moved and no squares are attacked.

♙ ♟

En Passant

If an opponent's pawn moves two squares and lands beside your pawn, you can capture it "in passing" on the next move only.

♕ ♖ ♘ ♗

Pawn Promotion

When a pawn reaches the opposite end of the board, it must promote to a queen, rook, bishop, or knight. A popup lets you choose.

Game Interface

Understanding the game screen helps you play more effectively. Here's a breakdown of each component.

Winning Conditions

There are several ways to win (or draw) a game on ChessStake. Here are all the possible outcomes.

Checkmate

The king is in check and has no legal moves to escape. This is the ultimate way to win a chess game.

Timeout

If your opponent's clock runs out, you win (provided you have enough material to checkmate theoretically).

Resignation

A player may resign at any time if they feel the position is hopeless. This immediately ends the game.

Draw

Games can end in a draw by stalemate, insufficient material, threefold repetition, 50-move rule, or mutual agreement.

Draws and Stakes

In staked games, draws result in both players getting their stakes back minus a small fee. Neither player wins the pool in a draw.

Game Actions

During a game, you have access to several actions. Use them wisely - some cannot be undone.
